stir-fried shredded potatoes
I have so many potatoes right now. My CSA is expecting a bumper crop of them this year, and I’m already fretting over how I’ll use them all. This is a Chinese dish called 炒土豆絲 (chǎo tǔ dòu sī), which translates very simply to stir-fried potato shreds. The phrase for potato very literally means “bean of the earth”, which is kinda like the French pomme de terre, oui? ...

cornmeal blueberry lemon pancakes
I guess I’m all about breakfast this week. I never order pancakes at restaurants (I’ve always stuck to the savory side of the brunch menu), but sometimes I get kind of excited about making them myself at home. 1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour 1/4 cup all purpose flour 1/4 cup cornmeal 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 Tablespoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2...

yogurt for breakfast
Here’s what I had for breakfast today (and most days), lest you think I’ve lost my mind with that previous ice-cream-for-breakfast post. Plain yogurt with oat flakes, fruit (the last of the blueberries from the farmers’ market!), and honey. Note to self: Need to make my own yogurt sometime. And homemade granola.

last-day-of-summer pasta
Goodbye tomatoes, it’s been a rough summer. Hope things go better next year. Hey there string beans. I will always love you. Hello shell beans. We’ll get to know each other better this fall and winter. You all go so nicely with pasta, garlic, parsley, olive oil, a small squeeze of lemon, and lots of pecorino romano cheese. John and I re-visited our dining-together roots tonight by...

eggplant and eggs, two ways
I’ve been meaning to post this for awhile now. Back in July, Tanveer (warning: beautiful photos will take over your computer screen when you click on that link) and Kelly invited me over for a supper of Bangladeshi food on their jealousy-inducing roof deck. We guests loaded up on insect repellent to brave Brooklyn’s hungry mosquitoes while Tanveer fired up the stove and braved the...

MILKMADE ice cream
We’re really doing it! MILKMADE is a creamy collaboration between my college buddies Diana and Pavla and me. And we’ve been covered on Grub Street! I am so excited.

corn, tomato, and edamame salad
I am at home in sunny southern California right now, with the privilege of being a bridesmaid at a very exciting family wedding (congratulations Brenda and Chris!). Had I not stuffed my face the evening before my flight, this would’ve been part of a delicious and summery carry-on lunch. It’s a colorful succotash of sorts, with sweet tomatoes, crisp bacon, and a simple miso dressing. ...

i scream, you scream
Diana (photo taken from here) and I made nectarine and raspberry ice cream in her kitchen on Saturday. Hurray for our first collaborative batch! And then I went home and made some coffee ice cream using custard from a previous failed batch. If you ever want to see me in my most dejected state, by the way, come find me right after I’ve produced un-frozen ice cream, flat gougères, or...

sauteed peppers with eggs and quinoa
You know that feeling, where you throw a meal together in a hurry because you’re really, really hungry (but don’t feel like putting on pants to leave the house in your unshowered state), and it turns out being kind of fantastic despite your low expectations? It’s a good feeling. Pepper season has been in full force at my CSA. While I often add bits of them here and there, I...
